Located adjacent to the Presidio, this Spruce Street residence was completely renovated and modernized with an open floor plan and floor-to-ceiling glazing to take advantage of the spectacular views of the historic park and Golden Gate Bridge. Each level was transformed in functionality and aesthetics as the levels of private spaces and entertainment areas were swapped. In order to take advantage of the expansive views of Presidio Park, large areas of the existing structure were removed and the entertainment areas of dining and gathering were moved to the upper levels. A new basement, a vertical addition over the garage, and a roof deck were added to provide additional usable space.

Refined details carefully marry the existing mid-century modern residence, built in 1949, with the new light-filled space. A new central floating staircase connects the two levels without blocking light that filters through to the lower levels. Large skylights, including walkable skylights, allow for additional light to flow into the spaces. Creative gravity and lateral system solutions were provided to minimize framing depth and maximize ceiling and window heights.
